I recently attended the intro to navigation course, Glenn was the instructor and was very knowledgeable. Dubh Mor provide an unrivalled service and experience in the mountains. Neil's no nonsense approach is right up my... street and I gained a wealth of knowledge from his attention to detail. There was a mix of abilities on the winter skills week which I attended, which Neil took in his stride to deliver a course which was able to push everyone's ability and knowledge.
Neil does not stop at the end of the mountain day, giving talks and tutoring on the theoretical aspect to climbing, weather and mountain safety.

A life changing week. As someone who has been scared of heights, I never imagined I would be able to do anything like... this. There are few people like Neil who can connect with you and push you out of your comfort zone so you learn so much about yourself. Amazing week on and off the mountains in such a supportive environment with a great group of people. Such a knowledgable guide who was able to adapt to every situation. Recently spent a week with Neil on his mountaineering course. I chose to do this instead of my usual ski trip and... cannot overstate how much of a good decision this was! The weather was not ideal due to poor snow but Neil still ensured that we left with all the required skills regardless and I couldn't have been happier. We covered everything I wanted to and more. I left the course with ample confidence to get on the hills independently, and having little prior experience this was certainly an achievement. Neil as an individual is everything you want in an instructor: calm, patient, knowledgeable, experienced, and generally an ideal role model for anyone who wants to be a great human being. Even after we returned on our own and bumped into him, he was more than happy to lend guidance, kit, or support. Currently looking to rebook on a course next year!read more
I've just finished a winter mountaineering course with Dubh Mor Outdoor and they didn't disappoint. They have a very... professional approach to teaching and it became apparent quickly that safety came first. I found that they were able to accommodate all abilities within the group. Everyone was made to feel very welcome and we were given the option as to what mountaineering skills we would like to cover the most. Everybody lives together for the week which was ideal for us to all bond as a team and make good friendships. The course was adapted during the week to suit the weather and avalanche forecast which was great because it kept the course flexible. If you're looking at taking your winter skills to the next level this is the course for you.read more

My day out with Neil was superb. We had an initial setback due to some inaccurate information from Cairngorm Mountain... website and discovered that the mountain road had been closed without notice despite the plough sitting at the gate ready to go. Neil dealt brilliantly with this situation and quickly had a more than suitable alternative planned. We had some challenging conditions to deal with on Beinn a’Chaorainn but Neil’s skills and experience shone through. I felt thoroughly well guided and safe throughout the course of the day despite properly white out conditions at the summit and along the ridge. Neil’s instructions were clear and I quickly got my head around some new skills thanks to his guidance. I thoroughly recommend Neil and Dubh Mor if you are wanting to develop your mountain skills or are wanting to start out. His good humour, chat, honesty and flexibility will ensure you will have a cracking day out in the hills.read more
Two weeks ago I attended the winter skills course run by Dubh Mor, along with 3 great mates. We’d booked it almost 1... year earlier so it’s fair to say there was a fair bit of anticipation. We weren’t disappointed.
We are regular hill walkers and our aim was to enjoy the chance to have time up in the Cairngorms while also learning and updating winter skills at the same time. That’s what we got.
Over two days we probably spent 6 hours above 1000m (and another dozen walking in and out). We don’t have the same scope in Ireland. We did lots of ice axe and crampon work. I enjoyed every minute.
Néill and Glenn are obviously in their element in that environment but they were also super patient with us. I felt challenged but safe and I laughed a lot along the way. That’s what I’d hoped for.
In the two weeks since that weekend my overriding urge has been to get back up into the clouds. I’m more confident now and I got what I wanted from the trip. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to other people.
Yes it was challenging at times; only a couple of pints were had, but it was rewarding in every sense. Many thanks to Neill and Glenn. I would come back tomorrow if I could. I will be back at some point.read more

Walked with several guides in the past including Mountain Guides, Mountain Leaders and Mountain Instructors. Each giving me different learning curves. Today with Neil was altogether a great technical learning day taking home lots of lessons and things to practice. Easy to follow up and down-if that’s what you want. Better for me was how he broke down the components to give me a better understanding of how to make better choices and keep myself safe and secure. Effortlessly finding routes to practice the skills he was teaching me. Impressed myself with what I achieved today. If you want technical understanding, improvement in movement and confidence Neil is the Mountain Instructor for you.read more

Neil has a superb knowledge of... the outdoors, the surrounding area, gaelic and tells some great stories.
In terms of his skills on the mountains he offered options for easy or harder routes involving some scrambling and was full of tips, techniques and encouragement.
Safety is a clearly a priority and manages to assess this quickly in terms of weather conditions and level of the people and group.
He also has the most adorable, well behaved dog Reeva you will ever meet!

Absolutely fantastic two days on the hills with Neil in our two attempts and one success to summit the ln Pinn. We now look at rocks through Neils eyes....'Playtime'..... potential play gyms in the great outdoors!! His sense of fun helped us discover a new fun aspect to bagging hills. Scrambling rocks :-)!
He had contingency plans in place for when the weather wouldn't play ball so even if we didn't reach the targeted summit we still felt we achieved.
Neil was highly tuned into the ever changing conditions & surroundings and us, making us feel very safe.

Spent a day with Neil and others around Loch an Eilein on the last day of my winter course in February. It was the best... day that I had that week, as I had a different instructors for different things. Neil took us (myself and 4 others) around Loch an Eilein and we attempted to go up a summit - sorry, Scottish names do escape from my head - but we weren't able to due to heavy snow fall and wind. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed Neil's company, his great knowledge and insight into the Gaelic language and culture, of all the different parts of the world and all the exciting things that he got up to, and of course, he knows his stuff in the great outdoors. He's got all that you could ask for in an instructor/ guide: knowledge, sense of humour, confidence with himself and he's quite generous in giving those confidence out, too! Highly recommended and I look forward to doing some other courses with him in the near future.read more

We spent two days with Neil in Glencoe on winter skills. We loved it!
From our first meeting at the co-op in... Ballachulish where we were all buying essentials (sandwiches and Fanta mainly) we were very impressed with Neil’s approach to learning. He took great care to understand what the group wanted from the weekend and tailored the activities to suit. His relentless enthusiasm and positivity were really infectious. (why he needs coffee at all - though he chugs it like water - is a continued mystery to us!)
We covered everything that we needed to across the 2 days but the thing that made it so good was the variety of information that was shared. As well as the winter skills, we discussed at length many topics, enabled mainly by Neil’s globetrotting experience and immense store of stories. He was unfailingly cheerful throughout and dealt with the different needs of the group really well. It was also really good to see someone who loves the hills and his job share his passion. Even when basically telling two ill equipped ramblers outside of our group that they were risking their own and others lives and how they might best survive their choices, he did it in such a way that the message was clearly received but with great kindness and humility.
I’d definitely use Neil again. Not sure that we can agree on Pierce Brosnan being the best Bond though....read more
